Porsche says that its new flagship Spyder RS will be available to order from today, costing $336,800 before on-road costs
Porsche has formally pulled back the curtains on its much-anticipated 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS. Designed as a convertible variant to the acclaimed Cayman GT4 RS, this high-performance open-top sports car exhibits extreme maneuverability and agility for unrivaled driving pleasure.
Underneath the hood, the 718 Spyder RS is powered by the 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six engine derived from the 911 GT3. This powertrain generates a slightly tempered 368kW/450Nm, ensuring robust performance that brings a unique thrill to every ride. Unlike its siblings, this high-performance convertible will exclusively feature a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, omitting a traditional manual option.
The Porsche 718 Spyder RS will mark its grand entrance in Australia in the second quarter of 2024, carrying a price tag starting from $336,800 before on-road costs. This positions the Spyder RS as a considerably more expensive option within the 718 Boxster range, costing around $117,000 more than the current standard 718 Spyder model.
The Spyder RS doesn't just present a higher price; it also offers more power and a lighter frame. Equipped with the GT3's 4.0-litre flat-six engine, the Spyder RS can sprint to 100km/h in just 3.4 seconds, and achieve 200km/h in a mere 10.9 seconds. This new model boasts an additional 59kW over its standard 718 Spyder counterpart and weighs in at a lighter 1410kg - a solid 40kg less than the regular Spyder.
Distinctive features of the Spyder RS include a sun sail-style weather deflector, a component familiar to fans of past Spyder models. Porsche's active suspension management system is also on board, providing a smooth ride by lowering the vehicle by 30mm.
The Spyder RS makes an impactful statement in weight reduction, weighing a notable 40kg less than the standard 718 Spyder. This substantial drop is largely due to the new, lightweight, soft-top roof, a two-piece design that can be fully removed and conveniently stored in the vehicle. This novel roof assembly saves an impressive 7.6kg compared to the regular 718 Spyder’s roof, and 16.5kg less than a standard 718 Boxster’s power-operated soft-top.
Inside, the 718 Spyder RS offers a sophisticated, driver-focused interior. Full bucket seats, constructed from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic in a weave finish, are trimmed in black leather with Arctic Grey or Carmine Red 'Race-Tex' centres, and come complete with ‘Spyder RS’ headrest embroidery.
The RS sports steering wheel, trimmed in Race-Tex, includes paddle shifters and a yellow 12 o’clock marker, complementing the leather-trimmed dashboard and door inserts in the standard model.
For those desiring an extra touch of opulence, an optional Weissach package is available, which adds forged magnesium wheels and titanium sport exhaust tips.
The Weissach Package provides an optional upgrade for the discerning driver. This package includes titanium tailpipes, a ‘Race-Tex’ synthetic suede dashboard, and the option to swap the standard 20-inch forged aluminium wheels for unique forged magnesium units, offering additional weight savings and a distinctive aesthetic appeal.
When it comes to color choices, buyers can select from four solid and three metallic options, including the new Vanadium Grey Metallic finish. Three special colors - Arctic Grey, Shark Blue, and Ruby Star Neo (pink) - are also available.
Australian-bound Spyder RS models will come outfitted with a range of features as standard. These include automatic dimming mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, park assist with a reversing camera, LED dynamic headlights, a light design package, and DAB radio. Both seat heating and a Bose surround sound system will be available as complimentary options.
With the unveiling of the 718 Spyder RS, Porsche further underscores its commitment to delivering high-performance, meticulously designed sports cars. The 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS is expected to be the last petrol variant before the 718 model range transitions to electric power in the coming years.
As Porsche's latest engineering marvel, the 718 Spyder RS is sure to be a hit among driving enthusiasts and car connoisseurs alike. Its release will be a significant milestone in Porsche's long-standing history of producing top-tier sports cars. Prepare to witness the pinnacle of driving pleasure with the Spyder RS – a perfect blend of power, agility, and design that redefines the boundaries of convertible sports cars.
