The 2024 Land Rover Defender: a comprehensive look at its price and specifications
The Defender range in Australia is more expansive than ever, with new variants and powertrains for the 2024 model year

Anticipation is building as Jaguar Land Rover unveils detailed specifications and pricing for the 2024 Land Rover Defender series, with deliveries expected to commence from November 2023.

The expanded 2024 lineup introduces 21 distinctive variants, catering to a wide range of customer preferences. This includes the new Hard Top commercial model, the eco-friendly P400e plug-in hybrid, and the potent V8-powered 130 variant, each boasting unique characteristics and attributes.

Added to the mix this year is a Loadspace Floor Tray accessory, designed for the Defender 90 models as well as the eight-seater 130, offering an almost level load space. Other new additions for the Defender 90 include a parachute grab handle, a fast fold-and-slide front passenger seat, and 40:20:40 split/fold rear seats.

The Hard Top model, an industrious version of the 110, features a cabin partition and lockable underfloor storage, optimizing the space for cargo. In the interest of utility, this model eliminates the second and third rows of seating but presents the option for an additional three-person jump seat in the front.

Engine Lineup

A wide range of engines is available to power the 2024 Land Rover Defender series. Petrol variants range from the P300 with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine to the impressive P525, boasting a 5.0-litre supercharged V8. For those seeking a diesel alternative, the D250 and D300 offer a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine. All engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the robust all-wheel-drive system comes standard across all variants.

Efficiency & Dimensions

Fuel economy figures vary across the models, with the hybrid P400e offering the most efficient consumption of 3.4L/100km and an electric range of 52km.

The Defender series continues to impress with its towing capacity, ranging between 3000kg and 3500kg, depending on the variant. The size of the models also varies, with each offering distinct dimensions, boot space, ground clearance, and wading depth.

Servicing, Warranty & Safety

The 2024 Land Rover Defender series offers a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Official service pricing for 2024 models will be announced shortly.

The series continues to uphold high safety standards, maintaining a five-star ANCAP rating, covering all petrol, diesel, and hybrid 110 variants, excluding the V8. The comprehensive safety package includes features such as autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and more.

New Trims & Features

The 2024 Defender series has seen a reshuffle of its trims, with the discontinuation of the base Defender grade and the replacement of the SE trim with the X-Dynamic SE. Although this has led to a surge in the starting price, the standard equipment list for the new base variant is more comprehensive than its predecessor.

Among the newly introduced models, the Defender 110 now offers a County appearance pack in S P300 and P400 forms. The Defender 130 gets an adventure-ready, five-seat Outbound model and the option of a V8 variant. Also making its debut is the commercial-grade Defender 110 Hard Top D250 S variant, designed with a spacious rear load space and increased payload.

Regardless of the model or trim selected, the 2024 Land Rover Defender series ensures a luxurious, safe, and adventurous ride. With its expected arrival in Australian showrooms later in 2023, the new Defender range is well worth the wait.

Powertrains Across Variants

The Land Rover Defender’s 2024 range features Ingenium turbocharged four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, including a selection of three models powered by the iconic 5.0-litre supercharged V8. The Defender line-up starts with the 'P300' models fitted with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine delivering 221kW/400Nm.

The entry-level diesel models, labeled 'D250', feature a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine offering 183kW and 570Nm of torque. These are exclusively available in the Defender 90 S and 110 Hard Top S models. More powerful mild-hybrid six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines cover the majority of higher-grade trim levels, with the petrol P400 engine offering 294kW/550Nm, and the D300 diesel engine providing 221kW/650Nm.

Furthermore, a plug-in hybrid option also joins the Australian lineup for the first time. The Defender P400e is expected to deliver an impressive combined output of 297kW/640Nm. Lastly, the top-tier models feature the esteemed 5.0-litre supercharged petrol V8, which offers 386kW/625Nm in the 90 and 110 models, and 368kW/610Nm in the longer Defender 130.

Safety and Technology

Land Rover maintains its commitment to safety with the Defender achieving a five-star ANCAP rating, including a commendable adult occupant protection rating. Standard safety features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert, to name a few.

On the technology front, even the base Land Rover Defender variant boasts an impressive suite of features, such as a 360-degree camera, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, and wireless phone charging. Furthermore, the higher-grade Defender X specification, now exclusively available in the five-door 110 form, gains a state-of-the-art 15-speaker Meridian surround sound system.

Anticipating Arrival

The 2024 Land Rover Defender range marks a significant evolution of this legendary nameplate. With an impressive selection of new models, enhanced specifications, and a generous equipment list, the Defender continues to showcase its reputation as a versatile, off-road capable vehicle. Australian showrooms are expected to welcome the Defender range later in 2023, promising an adventurous ride to those willing to explore.
