Jeep has implemented some minor modifications to the Wrangler, in anticipation of a more significant overhaul expected to roll out by the close of the year.
For 2023, Jeep has made some changes to its Wrangler lineup while keeping prices steady. The line continues to include two-door Wrangler Rubicon and four-door Wrangler Unlimited Night Eagle, Overland, and Rubicon models. Below are the updates for 2023:
The previously leather-wrapped steering wheel has been replaced by one finished in leatherette across all models.
All variants have lost their luggage compartment floor mat.
The Overland and Rubicon models no longer have the Trail Rail cargo management system.
Similar to the Gladiator, the Wrangler Rubicon also loses its front axle disconnect. Nevertheless, it keeps its locking front and rear differentials and sway bar disconnect, and the claimed fuel economy remains the same.
The Night Eagle model receives a new wheel design, as does the Rubicon, which moves from a polished 17-inch wheel with black pockets to a machined black wheel. The previous wheel design is now optional.
Both Night Eagle and Overland models upgrade from their 650 Amp batteries to 700 Amp ones.
The Rubicon model no longer offers a Black/Dark Saddle interior option. All models now come exclusively with a black interior.
Unfortunately, Australian consumers don't have access to some engine options available in North America, including a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a plug-in hybrid turbo four with 4xe branding. The local lineup only features the time-tested Pentastar V6 engine.
Last year, Jeep had significantly raised prices across the range, attributing it to "a convergence of global market forces", including semiconductor shortages and increasing freight and material costs. The price increases ranged from $6600 to $7000 early in the year and again in August by between $6000 and a sizable $12,000. This year, however, the prices have remained stable.
Pricing
2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Night Eagle: $81,450
2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon: $83,950
2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Overland: $86,950
2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon: $90,450
All prices exclude on-road costs
Engine Performance and Fuel Efficiency
All variants of the Wrangler in Australia derive their power from a 3.6-litre non-turbo V6 petrol engine. This engine delivers 209kW and 347Nm, which is transferred to either the road or off-road terrain through an eight-speed automatic transmission and selectable four-wheel drive system.
Two distinct four-wheel-drive systems are available.
The Night Eagle and Overland models are equipped with the Selec-Trac on-demand system, which includes a two-speed transfer case.
Rubicon models, on the other hand, get an upgrade to Jeep's Rock-Trac on-demand system. This comes with a two-speed transfer case, locking front and rear differentials, and an electronic front stabiliser bar disconnect. They also replace the Dana M186 front and M200 rear axles with Dana M210 and M220 units, respectively, and feature an additional Off-Road+ mode.
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in two-door style consumes 10.1L/100km on a combined cycle, while the Unlimited Night Eagle and Overland consume 9.7L/100km, and the Unlimited Rubicon uses 10.3L/100km.
Safety
The Jeep Wrangler received a three-star rating from ANCAP, based on tests conducted in 2019.
It earned an adult occupant protection rating of 60 per cent, a child occupant protection rating of 80 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 49 per cent, and a safety assist rating of 51 per cent.
All Wrangler models come standard with:
Autonomous emergency braking
Blind-spot monitoring
Rear cross-traffic alert
Adaptive cruise control
Reversing camera
Front and rear parking sensors
Front and front-side airbags
Tyre pressure warning indicator
Warranty and Servicing
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler requires servicing every 12 months or after 12,000km, whichever comes first.
Along with a five-year, 100,000km warranty, Jeep provides five years of capped-price servicing. Each service is priced at $399.
Dimension
The two-door Wrangler Rubicon measures 4334mm in length, 1894mm in width and 1841mm in height, with a 2459mm wheelbase.
The four-door Unlimited variants measure 4882mm in length and 1894mm in width, with a 3008mm wheelbase. The height fluctuates depending on the variant - 1828mm for Night Eagle, 1838mm for Overland, and 1848mm for Rubicon.
The wading depth is consistent across all models at 760mm, although running clearance and approach, departure and breakover angles vary.
The two-door Rubicon comes with a 66L fuel tank, while all Unlimited models feature an 81L tank.
All models are compatible with 91RON regular unleaded fuel.
