New electric small SUV arrives with a reasonably sharp price and decent kit – but with a limited driving range
Peugeot is set to shake up the electric crossover market in Australia later this year, with the eagerly anticipated arrival of the e-2008. The all-electric SUV variant is priced at a competitive $59,900 before on-road costs and is available for pre-order as we speak.
Following closely behind the e-Partner van, Peugeot's inaugural electric vehicle in Australia, the e-2008 features an identical electric powertrain and an aesthetic that sets it apart from its traditional 2008 counterparts. Eye-catching differences include body-colour grille slats and signature e-2008 badging.
The e-2008 will be one of several hybrid and electric vehicles Peugeot plans to roll out across 2022 and 2023, as the brand sets its sights on greener technology. The e-208 light hatch and mid-sized e-Partner van are also being evaluated for the Australian market.
Under the hood, the 2023 e-2008 is powered by a single 100kW electric motor, delivering 260Nm of torque and enabling a 0-100km/h acceleration in 9.9 seconds. The e-2008 houses a 50kWh battery, boasting a respectable range of 328km as per the WLTP test cycle. Charging flexibility is a key selling point, with the vehicle compatible with AC power up to 11kW and DC power up to 100kW. Using the latter, a 0 to 80% charge takes approximately 30 minutes.
In terms of dimensions, the 2023 Peugeot e-2008 measures 4300mm in length, 1987mm in width, and 1550mm in height, with a 2605mm wheelbase. The boot offers 434L of space, expanding to a generous 1467L with rear seats folded.
Customers can feel secure with Peugeot’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. In addition, a series of affordable capped services are offered over the course of five years, with intervals set at 12 months or 25,000km.
The e-2008's suite of safety features appears to include adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, as well as a range of standard features offered on other 2008 models, including autonomous emergency braking, a reversing camera, and rear parking sensors. While ANCAP is yet to assess the e-2008, the petrol-powered Peugeot 2008 holds a five-star safety rating.
Peugeot promises a "limited initial allocation" of the e-2008 between July and September 2023. This variant, however, will not receive a mid-life upgrade scheduled to be unveiled in Europe on 4 May 2023. It is unclear when the upgraded model will hit the Australian showrooms.
The e-2008 arrives decked out in mid-grade GT specifications, adding features such as 18-inch black alloy wheels, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat with massage functionality, and optional panoramic sunroof.
With its impressive array of features and competitive price, the 2023 Peugeot e-2008 is gearing up to make its mark in the electric vehicle market in Australia.
