The BMW X5 has been facelifted for 2024, with improvements made to powertrain, design and standard specification
BMW's highly anticipated revamped 2024 X5 has been unveiled, boasting fresh aesthetics, enhanced interiors, advanced tech features, and updated powertrain options. This model is scheduled to roll off the production line in April 2023, with an Australian launch expected in Q3 2023.
Among the most noteworthy improvements is the range of refined powertrains. The plug-in hybrid xDrive50e now delivers a more potent performance, with an upgrade of 70kW and 100Nm from the outgoing 45e. This is thanks to an enhanced inline-six petrol engine paired with a considerably more powerful electric motor. A combined total output of 360kW and 700Nm allows it to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a swift 4.8 seconds. The enhanced 25.7kWh lithium-ion battery offers an impressive electric range of up to 110km.
The M60i, the latest flagship of the X5 line, succeeds the X5 M50i. Equipped with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine borrowed from BMW's newest M models, the M60i yields 390kW and 750Nm, keeping pace with the outgoing model despite having a new engine.
The 2024 X5 boasts four engine variants, providing power and performance to cater to all driving styles. The entry-level xDrive30d comes with a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline-six engine, producing 210kW and 650Nm of torque, and a 48V mild-hybrid system that enables it to sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds.
The xDrive40i features a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six cylinder petrol engine with increased outputs of 280kW and 520Nm, leading to a quick 5.4-second run to 100km/h. It also utilizes a 48V mild-hybrid system.
The redesigned X5 interior houses the latest iDrive 8.0 system found in the wider BMW range. The integrated curved display for infotainment and driver information is aligned with a wider button cull. Traditional physical climate controls have been replaced, and the gear selector is now a compact switch.
With its new makeover, the 2024 X5 introduces an increase in standard pricing ranging from $8000 to $10,000, coinciding with the amplified standard features and technology. The X5 M60i sees a price increase of around $23,000 over the equivalent outgoing model.
The dimensions of the 2024 BMW X5 reveal a spacious and commanding vehicle. Its length measures 4922mm, with a height of 1745mm and a width of 2004mm. The wheelbase spans 2975mm, providing a solid foundation for balanced handling and stability on the road.
When it comes to storage, the BMW X5 offers ample room. Non-hybrid models boast a generous 650L of boot space behind the second row, which expands to an impressive 1870L with the back seats folded down. For the plug-in hybrid variant, the X5 PHEV, there is 500L of boot space behind the second row, which can be extended to 1720L when the second row is folded.
Safety is a paramount feature in the 2024 BMW X5, which has been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating. This rating, however, is limited to the 3.0-litre petrol and diesel models. The plug-in hybrid and V8 models remain unrated as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021. Nonetheless, the X5 performed admirably in various safety aspects, achieving 89% for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupant protection, 75% for vulnerable road user protection, and 71% for safety assist features.
The 2024 X5 is packed with numerous advanced safety and driver-assist technologies under the umbrella of BMW's Driving Assistance Professional. These include an adaptive cruise control with stop and go, a front and rear cross-traffic alert, and a steering and lane control assistant. It also includes a lane keep assist system, a side collision warning, a lane change assistant, and a crossroads warning.
Additional safety features are the evasion aid and high beam assist, alongside an extensive Parking Assistant Plus system. The parking assistant includes active park distance control for the rear, a reversing assistant, a surround view with 360 cameras, a panorama view, and a 3D view. To round it off, the X5 comes with a speed limiter and speed limit info system.
BMW backs the X5 with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Although the 2024 model's service pricing hasn't been finalized, BMW Australia previously offered Service Inclusive pre-paid packages covering the first five years or 80,000 kilometres on the outgoing model.
Measured and practical, the 2024 BMW X5 combines style, power, and innovative technology, making it a worthy contender in the premium SUV market. Anticipated to arrive in Australian showrooms in Q3 2023, the new X5 brings BMW's timeless design and performance into the future.
