2023 Lexus RZ price and specs revealed
The all-wheel-drive 450e packs 230kW and will have a driving range off up to 400km off a single charge

The Australian automotive market is preparing for the arrival of the Lexus RZ, the marque's maiden entry into the dedicated electric vehicle (EV) space. Set to debut in May, the RZ will be offered in two initial variants: the RZ450e Luxury, with a starting price of $123,000 before on-road costs, and the RZ450e Sports Luxury, which will retail at $135,000 before on-roads.

The pricing strategy of the Lexus RZ mirrors that of competitors like the Genesis Electrified GV70, Mercedes-Benz EQC, and BMW iX. However, it presents a slight premium over the BMW iX3, Genesis GV60, and the Tesla Model Y.

Both RZ versions come with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, boasting 230kW of power and supported by a 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The new Lexus model is claimed to provide a driving range of 470km on a combined cycle, based on the less stringent ADR tests that align with the NEDC protocols.

Lexus states that the RZ can regain 80% of its battery capacity in just 30 minutes using a DC fast-charger, while a full recharge with a three-phase AC power source will take about six-and-a-half hours.

Customers will also benefit from the Lexus Encore Electrified Platinum program, providing perks like Lexus On Demand and free valet parking. Additionally, every RZ owner will receive a complimentary 7kW AC wallbox supplied and installed by Jet Charge.

Lexus Australia has also hinted at the introduction of a steer-by-wire system with a unique yoke steering wheel, to be released following the RZ's initial market debut. Further details are expected in due course.

John Pappas, Lexus Australia's CEO, expressed optimism about the RZ’s reception, stating, "I think the RZ is going to do very well. Whatever volumes we can get, I think will do well on that car."

The RZ will sit between the NX and RX in the Lexus range, with both Luxury and Sports Luxury trims equipped with a traditional round steering wheel at launch. An aircraft-style 'yoke' steering control is set to follow later.

The RZ's dual electric motors, developing a combined 230kW and connected to a 71.4kWh battery pack, offer a claimed driving range of 470km, while charging times range from 30 minutes for an 80% fast charge to six and a half hours for a full charge on a three-phase connection.

Both RZ variants come generously equipped, with the Luxury trim boasting features such as 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, synthetic leather-look seats, a 14-inch touchscreen, and an advanced safety tech suite. The Sports Luxury trim adds 20-inch wheels, a Mark Levinson premium stereo, a head-up display, suede seats, and a panoramic sunroof, among others.

Lexus will also offer complimentary home charging to Australian customers, along with access to the Lexus Encore Electrified Platinum program and the Lexus On Demand service.
