2023 GWM Cannon price and spec - new offrod XSR variant adds to the range
The diversified line-up of GWM Ute is now graced with the addition of a brand-new top-tier off-road variant, the Cannon-XSR. For those keen to drive it away immediately, it has been made available to private buyers at a price tag of $52,990.

GWM Ute has significantly expanded its range in 2023, introducing several new cab-chassis models earlier this year and now unveiling its latest off-road star, the Cannon-XSR.

The Cannon-XSR brings an evolution to the GWM Ute line, switching out the typical full-time four-wheel drive arrangement for a part-time system. This upgraded model boasts a locking front differential, complementing the rear one that comes as standard.

Noteworthy features of the new model include a crawl mode for precise slow-speed control, an innovative braking system which activates on the interior wheels for more effective turns on loose terrain, a protective underbody bash plate, sturdy steel bumpers on both ends, a redesigned grille, and all-terrain tyres of the 256/65 variety.

The GWM Ute has managed to outstrip its competitors in the market, with sales figures at the end of April exceeding those of the SsangYong Musso range (3181 vs 1239) and the LDV T60 Max (2953 sales).

Under the hood, the 2023 GWM Ute equips a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine delivering 120kW power and 400Nm torque, linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Depending on the model, the GWM Ute offers either rear- or four-wheel drive.

The four-wheel drive models come with a full-time system, low-range gearing, and a locking rear differential. The Cannon-XSR, on the other hand, introduces a part-time system with the same features and further incorporates crawl mode and Turn Assist By Braking.

The 2023 GWM Ute Cannon showcases an efficiency of 8.3L/100km in the combined cycle for the 4×2 ute variant and 8.4L/100km for the 4×2 cab-chassis. Four-wheel drive versions claim 9.4L/100km.

In terms of dimensions, the 2023 GWM Ute Cannon stretches 5410mm in length, stands 1934mm tall, and spans 1886mm wide, with a 3230mm wheelbase. The Cannon-CC version is slightly larger. The payload stands at 1130kg, with a braked towing capacity of 3000kg.

Regarding service and warranty, the Ute Cannon-CC comes with a generous seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, coupled with five years of roadside assistance. A five-year capped-price servicing agreement is also included, with the first service due at six months or 5000km, at a cost of $260.

Following its initial failure to secure a five-star ANCAP rating, the GWM Ute series was adjusted by the factory and subsequently earned the five-star rating in November 2021.

Across all models, standard safety features include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, seven airbags, including a front-centre airbag, reverse and passenger-kerbside camera views, rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, speed warning, traffic sign recognition, and tyre-pressure monitoring. The Cannon-L CC version adds a surround-view camera and front parking sensors to its repertoire, while the Cannon-X introduces a safe exit warning feature.

One of the significant deviations of the Cannon-XSR from other GWM Ute models is the incorporation of a part-time four-wheel drive system. This feature offers dedicated 2WD high-range, 4WD high-range, and 4WD low-range settings, providing a versatile driving experience.

This premium model is also equipped with 18-inch black alloy wheels shod in superior 265/65 R18 all-terrain tyres, vibrant red brake calipers, a front stabiliser to further enhance handling, unique wheel-arch flares, and an underbody bash plate for additional protection off-road.

Unlisted in the official media bulletin from GWM Australia but still present in the Cannon-XSR is an improved suspension system offering increased wheel articulation and 34mm additional ground clearance (totalling 228mm), partly due to the larger tyres, and a wider wheel track.

Similar to other models, the Cannon-XSR is powered by the same 120kW/400Nm 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel four-cylinder engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also includes the front locking differential, a Crawl Mode, and a Turn Assist feature that brakes the inside rear wheel to minimise the turning circle on loose terrains.

The Cannon-XSR sports a black grille, a new black sports bar, a black snorkel, steel front and rear bumpers, while the front end omits the standard front parking sensors found in the Cannon-X. On the inside, a sunroof has been introduced, a first for any GWM Ute model.
